See each lab site for lists of recent publications. The Department of Global Ecology's size allows us to be nimble and almost entirely unbound by traditional models of academia and indeed of science itself. Among many benefits, these features allow us to adopt a broader model of impact, one that goes beyond typical academic metrics to conduct fundamental research with an eye towards direct and large-scale societal impact. This does not imply a shift from fundamental to applied research. Rather, it represents a guiding principle in choosing scientific directions, and an active effort in nurturing the linkages between science and action.
The Department of Global Ecology's location alongside Carnegie Institution's Department of Plant Biology, both on the campus of Stanford University, facilitates movement of not only students, but also inspiration and ideas, among the departments and university.
